Today twisted_tulip graduated with her degree in education summa cum laude! Good for her, she has worked so hard for it, and I hope she finds the perfect job with the perfect school. I was not the best companion for her today, but I did try! I've just felt crappy all day, my body hurts and belly is bloaty and I just feel bleh.

Right before we left to celebrate the graduate at a weenie roast and bonfire, I watched the Kentucky Derby, mostly out of habit from when I was a kid--I am still fascinated by the power and heart of these young horses, even though I think the sport has become cruel and unhealthy. Today I saw a wonderful colt take the win by at least three lengths, and saw a filly have to be put down after finishing a strong and heartbreaking second. As it happened, I could only think of watching another filly go down when I was young. Her name was Ruffian, and I'll never forget her. I don't think I will forget Eight Belles either. When I watched the replay my eyes teared up--she gave that run absolutely everything she had, and it took her legs and finally her life in trade.
