I didn't have any saltine crackers, which is what my mother made squash casserole with, but I did have grits. So I decided to try this. It seems to have turned out pretty well.
Cut up some squash and onions, boil in salted water until tender. Drain.
Meanwhile cook 1 cup grits in 2 cups of water, boiling about 5 minutes or just until all the water is absorbed. Stir so it won't stick to the bottom of the pan. (Normally you use 3x water to grits, but not for a casserole).
Mash up squash and onions, add grits, pepper, some Tabasco, grated Cheddar cheese, and an egg.
Pour mixture into a casserole dish, top with more cheese, bake at 350 for 30 minutes. Let cool a bit so it will "set"; it's perfectly edible before then, but will be soupy.

Does anybody have any "graffiti" themed tats out there? I'd like to see them! My late husband was a graffiti artist and I'm thinking of having the last few words he wrote to me in a letter tattooed on my back in a graffiti style. I'm having trouble with the design, so I'm looking for inspiration.

Quote of the Day
“We always tell our daughters you can do anything—but I think the sharp reality was portrayed in Hillary’s race. . . I think she lifted up the self esteem of women across the country, across the world. . [S]he helped all of us. I think she’d be an incredibly important pick for vice president.”
-- Rep. Carolyn Maloney (D.-N.Y.)
Rep. Maloney's remarks were made at a Lifetime Television-sponsored event on the topic of politics and feminism. The "sexism, misogyny and stereotyping” used against Hillary Rodham Clinton’s presidential campaign was the recurring theme at the event, along with the question of when a woman might finally get elected president in this cowboy country.

Gawdess, these things are so cheesy, but its a nice piece of gender fuck cultural artifact, and it actually proved to be challenging and sophisticated about it, while being simple and fun.

A lot of these people had me "fooled" (I guessed incorrectly,) which says something, considering my highly effective "tranny radar." I mean, I just know how to pick my kin out better than most of the populace, and I still only got 71% right.
I think these are a bunch of persons in drag, and you're guessing what they are living as most of the time. Or else, it was what they ID'd as, or something. Its not totally clear, but it sure made me think, and loose some of my jaded assumptions about queerness. (Hey, we all pick them up if we're at it long enough.)
Have fun!

It's hot as get out here in DC, and the idea of cooking anything makes me want to take a hot poker to my eye. I went with takeout for dinner, but thought "now, what can I put in tomorrow's bento . . "

Contents: Prosciutto and arugula pizza; yellow and red grape tomato mozzarella skewers, rainier cherries.
Prep: I removed the two large containers to make room for the pizza. My new picks came, and it was easy to put the skewers together. Cherries and broccoli went right into the containers.
Verdict: Tasty. I think it's a slightly bigger lunch than I've been taking of late, but I didn't feel stuffed.

Contents: Mini bagel with lox, neufchatel, and cucumber; strawberries, grapes, white peach, and blueberries.
Prep: It was a bit of a challenge to get the mini-bagel into the small tier of the bento. I ended up eating two of the pieces so that it fit. ;) I cut the fruit up this morning, and used the new food cups that came in the mail.
Verdict: A nice, light breakfast. I am having a bit of a challenge working with this narrow box, especially versus the long, wide tupperware box I was using before. I did treat myself to a slightly wider one that should be arriving soon, but this one has been great for getting a variety of fruit, at least. At some point, I'll make some hardboiled eggs--that might be fun to put in this box.

I am on the west coast, and my friends in the eastern half of North America have noticed this as well.
Why the hell is there such a rise in the number of musicians amplifying music? Why is it nearly always folks playing Near- and Middle-Eastern music?
Nothing says 'pre-1600' to me like a stack of Marshall amps - something (NOT joking) I see too often out here...

What's on my mind?
The fact that I brought the garbage to the curb before this happened.
YAY! Go me!!!

The following was developed as a mental age assessment by the School of Psychiatry at Harvard University. Take your time and see if you can read each line aloud without a mistake.
The average person over 40 years of age cannot do it!
1. This is this cat.
2. This is is cat.
3. This is how cat.
4. This is to cat.
5. This is keep cat.
6. This is an cat.
7. This is old cat.
8. This is fart cat.
9. This is busy cat.
10. This is for cat.
11. This is forty cat.
12. This is seconds cat.
Now go back and read the third word in each line from the top down and I bet you cannot resist passing it on.
